The rain hitting the metal rooftops of the businesses in the grimy part of the city was incessant, every drop ringing in the android's ears. No engineer had fully mastered giving their humanoid creations senses as strong as the average human's, but the repeated tang tang tang was starting to get annoying.

Truthfully, the android just wanted to go home. The attack on it that occurred tonight outside one of the sports bars was painful, yes, though not as painful as it would've been if it was human. It often found itself feeling grateful for its dulled physical sensations, and currently this was especially true.

The person (woman?) who sat on the bench with the android must've smoked ten cigarettes that day to smell as strong as she did to the android. It wasn't sure why the stranger wouldn't just let the android take the bus back home alone, it was fine now, and it couldn't be killed by something as simple as a few human kicks to the side and an even weaker punch in the face.

When the android turned, the stranger was staring at it with intense, black eyes. She didn't say anything, and the gaze wasn't discomforting, but it did feel vaguely like this person was looking for something.

"Thank you," the android said, "for stopping them."

The stranger didn't say anything. The android looked at the scarf wrapped around her head, which had a red, dusty pattern all over it. It reminded the android of the photos of Mars before it was colonized. Before humans found it. Before they had invented androids.

In its inspection, the android realized the white shirt the stranger was wearing had red stains around the collar. Its eyes widened, and of course the stranger noticed.

"I'm fine, sweetheart," she said. Her voice was deep and gentle, and it was hard for the android to believe that this was the same voice that had screamed at the men to leave the android alone at the bar.

"Are you sure?" the android asked.

The stranger sighed, looking forward at the street. "Don't worry about me. I just want you to get home okay."

"I'm perfectly capable of doing that on my own if you need medical attention."

"I'm fine." She sniffed, and the android finally noticed the drying blood around her nose. It didn't press further.
